Today post offices, banks, and many institutions across America are closed today in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. As an multicultural (African-American and South Asian-American) family this got us thinking about our union/unique family. What would our realities have been like as children and adults if there had not been a Martin Luther King, Jr . Here are 12 reasons we are grateful for Martin Luther King, Jr./ his legacy, and the civil rights movement.
12 REASONS WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
1.) We had the opportunity to meet each other and work together at the same corporation.
2.) We were able to get married.
3.) We are able to vote and have a voice when it comes to U.S. elections.
4.) We are unrestricted in our use of restrooms, water fountains, libraries, restaurants, movie theatres etc.
5.) We can/could go to the college/university of our choice and seek the highest degrees in the U.S. with hard work, passion, and dedication.
6.) My African-American parents were able to go to College/University in the U.S. and have the ability to reach for a better social economic environment for their children.
7.) My husband’s parents could move to the U.S. from India, go to College in the U.S., earn degree’s, and start a business in the U.S.
8.) We are able to live in multicultural neighborhoods; neighborhoods of our choosing instead of those specified for us.
9.) We were able to break the “glass ceiling” at the corporations we worked for.
10.) We can start business(es) in the U.S.
11.) We are able to create a blog/website called Growing Up Gupta that reasonates with readers of different ethnicities, nationalities, and religions.
12.) Diverse books, dolls, toys, and crafts were created, and exist for us to be able to celebrate our respective heritage. We can share these wonderful educational tools with our biracial/multicultural child and teach her the importance of who she is. Our daughter can dream BIG and those dreams can become reality!
