  • Today meet Shruthi Baskaran and Bankole Makanju! Shruthi @urbanfarmie is Tamil, and her fiancée, Bankole is Nigerian.
They met at a mutual friend's birthday party in Seattle, Washington. Shruthi was living in San Francisco, California at the time, and had flown in for the party. As cliche as it sounds, it was love at first sight for them and that was three years ago.
In November 2020, Bankole and Shruthi got engaged at a lovely little cabin in Southern Washington, and plan to get married in India next year in Chennai, India (which is also Shruthi’s hometown). #VanakkamWahala

Shruthi and Bankole’s advice for other couples is:
❣️Over-communicate. They often found that their "default" position on things was wildly opposite from each other. So, if and when they made assumptions on how someone would "normally" react, it just led to trouble. So, they learned early on to communicate their assumptions openly and over time, this has been pivotal for strengthening their relationship.
❣️Be patient with your families. As with many interracial couples, the road to getting their families on board was, mildly put, not easy. Shruthi sometimes feels like they went through the seven stages of grief with their families. But the mantra they held was patience and persistence. It was important for them to come together on the fact that they all wanted the same thing at the end of the day - their happiness. Both Bankole and Shruthi had to give their families time to let go of the vision they held for their children, and accept them for who they are. Ultimately they had to realize that Bankole and Shruthi make each other happy and support each other and nothing else matters.

What did you think about their advice? The part about feeling like they went through the seven stages of grief with their families is too relatable.
Don’t you just love seeing the celebration of both cultures—#namastewahala vibes anyone?

Congratulations Bankole and Shruthi on your upcoming nuptials!
