Multicultural Children’s Book Day: Yumi’s Extraordinary Collection Book Review

Multicultural Children’s Book Day brings attention to all the extraordinary children’s books available that celebrate diversity. This is my 2nd year as a book reviewer, and I’m elated to share with you all my review of Yumi’s Extraordinary Collection authored by, Elsa Takaoka, and illustrated by, Catherine Toennisson. This book is 38 pages in length, suitable for children ages 6-9 and grades 1-3.
Yumi’s Extraordinary Collection Book Review
Who doesn’t long to find their gift in this world? The talent that sets you apart from everyone else? Your purpose and passion?
This is a beautifully illustrated and life-enriching story about a Japanese-American girl named Yumi. She is born into a family that prides themselves on their amazing collections, but unlike her family, Yumi is not a natural collector. Instead, Yumi’s talent lies in her ability to draw. Still, she is insistent on having an extraordinary collection. Therefore, through determination, and inspiration from her sick grandmother, she finds her rightful place in her family.
All in all, as a mom, I’m always thrilled to find multicultural children’s books that I can read to my daughter that will help her understand the beauty of the diversity in the world. Yumi’s extraordinary collection is such a wholesome book; just looking at the cover makes you want to hug it. This book reveals that we all have our own unique talent. It speaks to the beauty of family culture and traditions. And it helps us to realize that ultimately things are not what matter. It is the people in your life, the life experiences, and stories behind the things that are most important. This book is a marvelous addition to any multicultural home, classroom, and library. Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents, and educators.
