From Auto Driver to Husband: The Inspiring Love Story of Ranjit & Sarah Across Continents

An Ordinary Day That Changed Everything

In 2012, Ranjit Singh’s life took a turn he could never have imagined. A proud Rajput from Rajasthan, he was working as an auto driver and local guide in Jaipur when fate stepped into his rickshaw.

Her name was Sarah Manschot, a traveler with Dutch and French roots. Visiting India with a friend, Sarah crossed paths with Ranjit near the City Palace. From the moment they met, something felt different, though neither could foresee the journey ahead.

Two Weeks in Rajasthan That Sparked a Lifetime of Love

Sarah and her friend hired Ranjit to guide them across Rajasthan. For two weeks, they explored Jaipur, Pushkar, Bundi, Udaipur, and Jodhpur—riding camels in the Thar Desert, watching golden sunsets over tranquil lakes, and bonding over countless cups of chai.

What began as a professional arrangement soon became something deeper.

When Sarah returned to Europe, Ranjit felt an emptiness that distance couldn’t erase. Through hours of Skype calls and heartfelt messages, their connection grew into love.

From Long Distance to Marriage

Since 2012, Ranjit and Sarah have built a life together, marrying in 2015 and raising two beautiful children. More than a decade later, their bond has only strengthened, grounded in trust, understanding, and resilience.

Family Opposition & Social Prejudice

Their love faced resistance from both sides.

• Ranjit’s traditional Rajput family rarely supported love marriages, especially to a foreigner.

• Sarah’s family worried about his intentions, questioning if residency was a factor.

Beyond family concerns, Ranjit endured social prejudice. As a 10th-grade dropout and auto driver, he was labeled “lower class” by many who doubted the relationship’s longevity. Gossip was constant: “She will leave him” or “It will never last.”

But Ranjit’s steady commitment and the arrival of their children eventually opened hearts and minds.

Overcoming Borders and Bureaucracy

The most difficult challenge came from immigration. Ranjit’s visa to France was rejected multiple times, making long-distance separation even more painful. In a bold move, the couple sat outside the French Embassy in Delhi to plead their case—and their persistence paid off when he was granted a three-month visa.

They also had to navigate cultural differences—Ranjit learned French, while Sarah embraced Indian traditions, blending their worlds into one family culture that celebrates both Diwali and Christmas.

Their Advice to Other Intercultural Couples

Ranjit and Sarah believe that love across cultures requires:

• Patience and persistence

• Respect for each other’s traditions

• Small daily efforts to build connection

• Never allowing distance or bureaucracy to win

Sharing Their Story With the World

During the pandemic, Ranjit launched Raj In France on YouTube, documenting their family life and travels to inspire others.

Their journey proves that love can thrive across continents, cultures, and challenges.

“They said it wouldn’t last. Thirteen years later, here we are—stronger than ever.”
