Interracial/Intercultural Marriage: Tamil-Canadian Woman And African-American Man

About Us

Melanie is Tamil-Canadian and Roland is African-American. They met in graduate school and
were long distance for the first three years of their relationship.  After Roland proposed,
Melanie moved to the United States.  Ironically, while Melanie hates spicy food, Roland loves
spicy Tamil dishes.  They just celebrated one year of marriage this summer.

Takeaways/Advice To Other Interracial/Intercultural Couples:

1. Be open to each other’s culture, views, customs, and religion.

2. Be upfront with your family about how you feel about your partner and your
relationship.  Hiding your relationship, or not being fully transparent about it, could lead
to more issues in the long run.

3. Don’t allow anyone, not even family or friends, to take away from your happiness.
